Rukiga, Uganda – The leadership of Muhanga Town Council Business Community League has taken a significant step by petitioning the Rukiga District Council over the growing concern of high property taxation rates imposed on landlords/house owners.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!In a letter dated June 19, 2025, addressed to the Rukiga District Council and signed by the Muhanga Business Community Chairperson, Dr. Birungi Johnson Byereta, the landlords/house owners have expressed their deep concerns about the unsustainable rates.
According to Dr. Byereta, about 70% of landlords/house owners in Muhanga Town Council are struggling to cope with the current rates, which are negatively impacting their operations.
Many business owners have expressed their concerns, stating that their businesses cannot generate sufficient revenue to meet the tax demands, leading to financial strain and potential closure.
In the letter, Dr. Byereta highlighted the need for a review of the property taxation rates, emphasizing that more reasonable and manageable rates would support business growth and development, ultimately contributing to the district’s economic well-being.
He also suggested that a meeting between the district council and business leaders may be necessary to explore possible solutions and find a mutually beneficial agreement.
The petition underscores the importance of finding a solution that balances the district’s revenue needs with the financial realities faced by landlords/house owners in Muhanga Town Council.
