NAIROBI – Kenya’s High Court has upheld the 2024 impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, dealing a severe blow to his political ambitions and permanently barring him from holding any public office.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The development was confirmed in a court ruling delivered on Monday, June 8, 2026, after a panel of three High Court judges unanimously dismissed Gachagua’s petition.
The judges rejected Gachagua’s claims that his 2024 impeachment was politically motivated and biased, solidifying the removal of a once-powerful figure who has since become one of President William Ruto’s fiercest critics.
However, the court did find that the Senate violated Gachagua’s rights when it failed to adjourn proceedings after he fell ill during the hearings.
The justices ruled that this mistake did not cancel the impeachment, but they awarded him 50 million shillings (about $386,000 or £290,000) in compensation.
Gachagua’s dramatic removal followed a spectacular fallout with President Ruto, his former running mate who won the 2022 election with strong support from Gachagua in Mount Kenya, the heartland of the country’s largest voting bloc.
But their alliance crumbled, and most lawmakers voted for Gachagua’s impeachment, accusing him of corruption, stirring ethnic divisions, and weakening the government.
He has repeatedly denied the allegations, calling them “baseless” and politically motivated, and argued that he did not get a fair hearing, even as the court upheld his removal and confirmed Kithure Kindiki as his replacement.
Ahead of the ruling, Gachagua urged his supporters to remain calm, saying he was prepared for any outcome but hoped for justice for himself and millions of his followers across the country. He asked them to wait until next year to express their anger at the ballot box.
Gachagua’s impeachment came just months after Kenya was rocked by massive anti-government demonstrations. Protesters breached security lines and set part of the parliamentary building ablaze, prompting a security crackdown in which dozens were killed.
