Rukiga MPs Patrick Kiconco Katabazi and Dr. Sylvia Arinaitwe have announced their ongoing efforts to lobby for the establishment of the First District Hospital and an additional Health Centre IV, aimed at enhancing access to quality health and medical services within the district.

The announcement was made on Saturday by Mr. Kiconco during an event in Bucundura Parish, Kashambya Sub-county, where supporters had gathered to congratulate him on his victory in the 2026 parliamentary elections.

Kiconco stated that he, Arinaitwe, and the district leadership are actively engaging with relevant government authorities to secure the hospital project for Rukiga. He revealed that their plan is to establish the hospital near the district headquarters in Mparo Town Council.

He further explained that, following the establishment of the district hospital, they will lobby to upgrade Kashambya Health Centre III to Health Centre IV. This implies that Rukiga would have a district hospital and two facilities at the Health Centre IV level, including Kamwezi Health Centre IV.

Beyond health, Kiconco disclosed that they have also met with Finance Minister Henry Musasizi to discuss progress on the 24-kilometer road connecting Rukiga to Rubanda District through Hamurwa Subcounty.

The Kashambya LC.3 Chairperson, Mr. Elineho Bandaganire, commended Kiconco and Dr. Sylvia for their active representation and lobbying efforts for Rukiga District, despite having been in office for only two months.

He highlighted their follow-up on the presidential pledge for the Muhanga-Kisiizi tarmac road project and the district hospital as particularly noteworthy.

The Bucundura Catholic Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Herbert Agaba, also expressed appreciation for the MPs’ support of religious institutions in Rukiga District.

“They have visited mosques, Pentecostal churches, the Church of Uganda, and the Catholic Church, supporting us equally and fairly,” Rev. Fr. Agaba remarked.

Meanwhile, Kiconco expressed his gratitude to the people of Rukiga for overwhelmingly voting for him, Dr. Sylvia Arinaitwe, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, and all NRM leaders in the January 15, 2026, elections.

He made history as the first Rukiga County MP to win in all six sub-counties, and his impressive 61.5% vote share was the highest among constituency MPs across the entire Kigezi Sub-region.

Kiconco has been appointed to the Parliamentary Committee on Budget and the Finance Committee. “These are strategic parliamentary committees, and through them, I will ensure that issues affecting Rukiga District are well addressed,” he stated during his speech to the people of Bucundura.

Ms. Christine Bonabaana, former Kashambya Sub-county Speaker and Kiconco’s area coordinator, explained that the purpose of the event was to congratulate Kiconco Patrick Katabazi and to celebrate their collective victory in the 2026 general elections.

In the Rukiga County MP election held on January 15, 2026, Patrick Kiconco Katabazi (NRM) was declared the winner with 25,309 votes, defeating Retired Captain Damson Christmas Kivumba (independent), who received 10,538 votes. Incumbent Roland Ndyomugyenyi Bish (independent) finished third, while Benita Bushari Rumanzi trailed with 266 votes.
