RUKIGA – The Muhanga Town Council enforcement team has issued a final ultimatum for street vendors to vacate the streets voluntarily by Sunday, May 10th, 2026, or face removal, after identifying three private relocation centers.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The ultimatum was announced by Muhanga Town Clerk, Mr. Kakaire Herbert, during a high-stakes traders’ engagement meeting on Tuesday, May 5th, 2026, at Nyeikunama prayer ground in Rukiga District.
Addressing a crowded gathering of business owners and street vendors, Mr. Kakaire struck a firm yet reconciliatory tone while urging compliance before the deadline.
“We have given you up to Sunday this week to vacate your current stations of work. It’s in your best interest to break yourselves rather than be broken during the trade order enforcement exercise,” Kakaire stated.
The Town Clerk confirmed that the affected traders have been assigned specific private sites under the new zoning plan for Muhanga Town Council, based on their line of business.
Wood and timber dealers, as well as welders and grinding mill operators, will relocate to a site near the Rotom Health Facility, while fresh food sellers along Muhanga–Kabale Road will move to Mukitanza along Muhanga–Kyogo Road. Meat handlers and food vendors will operate near Stabex Petrol Station on Muhanga–Mbarara Road.
The Town Clerk told business operators to engage landlords directly and noted that the Physical Planning Committee will guide site development, while landlords must submit lists of interested traders.
“Every trader now knows their assigned zone. Wood dealers go to Rotom, fresh food sellers move to Mukitanza, and food vendors operate near Stabex. Engage your landlords directly and let the Physical Planning Committee guide your site development. Landlords must submit lists of all people interested in working from their respective areas,” Kakaire emphasized.
Meanwhile, the Muhanga Town Council Physical Planner, Mr. Karugaba Innocent, confirmed to this reporter that a dedicated enforcement team will swing into action starting Monday, May 11th, 2026.
The Town Council Physical Planner confirmed that all the houses and business sites earmarked for clearing have been physically marked by the enforcement teams.
Karugaba warned residents to act before the deadline, emphasizing that people must clear themselves voluntarily to avoid the danger of property destruction or potential confrontations during the exercise.
Addressing concerns from residents whose private homes were marked, he clarified that the team wants every homeowner to improve their houses to meet the standards required in a growing town.
“We have informed the people themselves to clear themselves before the enforcement exercise to avoid further danger, including the destruction of property or potential confrontations. For the people staying in their houses, we only want them to better their houses to fit the standards needed in a growing town,” Innocent explained.
As the Sunday deadline approaches, tensions are running high in the bustling commercial hub, with the authorities remaining confident that the planned enforcement will usher in a new era of organized town governance.
