RUBIRIZI, UGANDA – The Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Rubirizi District, Dagaras Rwamutojo, has made an urgent appeal for an end to destructive family conflicts over inherited land.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The call was made on Tuesday during the official’s intervention in a heated land dispute among the family members of the late Yusuf Fikiri in Ryeru Sub-County, Rubirizi District.
D/RDC Rwamutojo emphasized that inherited land should be a tool for prosperity, not a source of conflict, advising families to utilize it to improve livelihoods, combat poverty, and develop their families.
“I strongly advise our families to always use the land to improve their livelihoods, fight poverty and hunger, and develop their families. We must stop turning this blessing into a source of conflict. This land should be a foundation for your future, not a reason for your downfall,” said Rwamutojo.
The Mugogo II Village LC I Chairperson, Yona Turyasiima, highlighted the devastating impact of such disputes on the social fabric of the community.
He lamented that a rising tide of inheritance conflicts is fracturing families throughout the district, a situation he described as entirely preventable.
“The value we place on hard work and education is what will truly develop our community. Parents should focus on educating their children and guiding them to work for their own success, rather than having them depend entirely on inherited property,” said Turyasiima.
A family mediation yielded positive results, with members Alan Niwagaba and Muhamadi Fikiri thanking the Office of the RDC for guiding them toward a peaceful resolution.
They pledged to remain calm and united, vowing to protect their parents’ legacy by using the land for productive purposes that can benefit future generations.
The family also committed to preserving both their family property and peace, having been guided to follow the proper legal procedures to resolve any remaining issues amicably.
