Bushenyi’s prestigious Kitabi Seminary School emerged as the overall winner of the SESEMAT Bushenyi and Rubirizi Region Science Fair 2026, securing the top position with an impressive average score of 69.3%. The boys’ secondary school demonstrated exceptional mastery across all practical disciplines.
Ndekye Secondary School, the gracious hosts, claimed second position with a commendable 61.8% average, while Bishop Ogez High School rounded out the top three with a score of 60.3%.
The competition tested students’ abilities in experiments, problem-solving, and scientific thinking, challenging them to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations.
Regional Coordinator Mwere Inocent noted that the SESEMAT competition transforms science education by connecting classroom theory to real-life applications in electricity, construction, mechanics, and catering.
“The initiative aims to improve the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in secondary schools. Today, we have witnessed teachers guiding students through hands-on experiments that connect classroom theory to real-life problems in electricity, construction, mechanics, and catering,” Mwere explained.
He further urged parents to provide more science equipment and encourage their children to pursue science subjects, stressing that national innovation begins in school laboratories.
Ndekye Secondary School Headteacher Tumuramye Alex Mabwindi, host of the 20 participating schools, thanked teachers and students for their commitment to the sciences.
He urged learners to take SESEMAT seriously, emphasizing that science and mathematics build confidence, accuracy, and teamwork while preparing students for jobs, technical colleges, and self-employment.
“Science and mathematics are the foundation of innovation and self-reliance. SESEMAT builds confidence, accuracy, and teamwork, preparing learners for jobs, technical colleges, and self-employment,” said Tumuramye.
Mumbere Derick from Ndekye Secondary School shared that SESEMAT transformed his understanding of science by replacing difficult theory with hands-on experiments that made learning simple and clear.
Natukunda Emaculate from Ryeru Seed School added that practical work improves exam performance and boosts confidence across all subjects.
She further noted that students gain valuable skills like measuring, wiring, and chemical handling, skills useful for jobs and self-employment after school.
Ultimately, SESEMAT builds critical thinking, discipline, and a reading culture, and bridges the gap between classroom theory and real-world application.
