KAMPALA – The former Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, is reportedly grappling with a grave health crisis that has currently confined her to immobility.

Among’s health crisis was disclosed by her long-time political ally, former Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko, via social media handles this week.

The former MP, Nsereko, who visited the former Speaker at her home, said that he found her condition deeply concerning, with severe leg swelling that has left her immobile.

He disclosed that Among is battling deep vein thrombosis, a serious blood clot in her legs, and he urgently appealed to Ugandans to pray for her recovery and timely medical care.

“I have seen with my own eyes the grave condition of Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among. She is battling deep vein thrombosis, a blood clot that has left her legs severely swollen and robbed her of the ability to walk. I urgently call upon all Ugandans to lift her in prayer, and I plead with those in authority to ensure she receives immediate medical care,” Hon. Nsereko disclosed.

Rt. Hon. Anita Among, who served as Speaker of the 11th Parliament, has not been seen in public for months amid ongoing investigations into allegations of corruption and illicit enrichment.

Reports indicate that she remains under strict movement restrictions, raising urgent questions about the balance between legal accountability and the fundamental right to healthcare.

Meanwhile, Nsereko drew a parallel to the case of jailed lawyer and former Mayor Erias Lukwago, suggesting that the government appears indifferent to the deteriorating health of both allies and adversaries alike.

“On one side they are persecuting Lukwago, who did not work with them; yet on the other, even those who have worked with them are also being pinched,” he lamented.

The Kumi Municipality MP, Silas Aogon, also called on authorities to release the former Speaker to rush for urgent medical care, possibly abroad, as leaders from the Teso region express deep concern over her deteriorating health.

Aogon appealed to the government to set aside political differences and prioritize Among’s life, emphasizing that no allegations should stand in the way of the State’s duty to protect her and grant her proper treatment.

“We, the leaders of Teso, are deeply troubled by what we are hearing about our sister, Among. Her health is failing, and she urgently needs proper medical attention. I appeal to the government to rise above politics and show mercy; no allegation should cost a life,” MP Aogon said.

The former Speaker, who rose to become one of the most powerful women in Ugandan politics, has been a polarizing figure, admired by many for her political acumen and criticized by others over governance and accountability concerns.
