KINSHASA – The presidents of Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are set to hold one-on-one bilateral talks on regional security and cross-border disease control efforts between the two neighboring nations.

The development follows Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye’s arrival in Kinshasa on Monday, June 22, 2026, for a 48-hour state visit at the invitation of Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi.

The two heads of state will hold a private one-on-one meeting at the African Union Headquarters, after which they will address the press together in a joint conference.

The discussions between the two leaders will focus on matters of shared concern, with the precarious security situation in eastern DRC taking center stage.

The region has long been plagued by armed group activity, and the talks are expected to explore avenues for enhanced cooperation in restoring peace and stability.

Equally pressing on the agenda is the response to the Ebola virus disease, which has once again threatened communities in affected zones.

DRC state sources indicate that the leaders will likely deliberate on coordinated strategies to contain the outbreak and protect vulnerable populations.

The state visit carries particular weight as President Ndayishimiye currently holds the rotating presidency of the African Union. His presence in Kinshasa not only reinforces bilateral relations but also signals the continental body’s commitment to addressing the DRC’s challenges.

The two-day working visit, scheduled to conclude on Wednesday, June 24, reflects the deepening partnership between Burundi and the DRC as they navigate shared security and public health challenges together.
