The arrests were made in an operation conducted in the early hours of May 6, 2026, at approximately 2:30 AM, targeting a local bar located along Court Road in Rukungiri Municipality.
The Kigezi Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, told the press that the suspects had camped inside the establishment under the guise of drinking alcohol. However, their unusual behavior and failure to genuinely consume beverages raised immediate red flags with the bar owners, who promptly alerted the police.
Following the police’s rapid intervention, authorities have not yet divulged the exact charges the group may face, citing ongoing investigations as the reason. Nevertheless, the late-night hour, the deceptive behavior, and the group’s composition have led investigators to treat the case with heightened seriousness.
Maate commended the bar owners and local community for their vigilance, calling their actions a textbook example of how responsible citizenship can directly support police efforts.
He further affirmed that disruptive operations will continue across the entire Kigezi region as part of an ongoing strategy to dismantle criminal networks and ensure a crime-free society.
“The bar owners and local community were very alert. Their quick action led directly to the arrest of these suspects. This is a perfect example of how good citizens can help the police. We promise that we will keep carrying out disruptive operations across the entire Kigezi region until we make society truly free of crime,” Maate confirmed.
The six suspects remain in police custody at Rukungiri Central Police Station as inquiries proceed, and residents are encouraged to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police post.
