KANUNGU – Kanungu District has commissioned the rehabilitation of the 23.1-kilometre Rutenga–Kinaba–Mpungu road, a UGX 158.7 million project aimed at improving community access across three sub-counties.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The project, scheduled to be undertaken over 28 working days, represents a critical intervention for residents who have endured decades of impassable roads, particularly during rainy seasons when the hilly terrain becomes treacherous.
Presiding over the groundbreaking ceremony at Kinaba Sub-County Headquarters early this week, Catherine Kaboonge Nakaye, Deputy RDC for Kanungu, urged the community to exercise discipline while using the improved road.
“Let us not be overexcited. Especially boda boda users, excitement is good for new things, but let us have a limit. We are not the only ones using this road. Even school-going children use it. They are young, they will use the road unknowingly,” she cautioned.
The Deputy RDC directed engineers to install speed humps in populated areas, appealed to road users to observe traffic regulations, and encouraged local leaders and residents to closely monitor the projects to ensure value for money.
The District Chairperson, Byamukama Francis, proposed increasing murram trips for the road, arguing that the mountainous terrain, especially the hills and slopes, needs far more than the suggested sixty trips.
He further ordered the Works Secretary to personally monitor the road twice and submit detailed reports, reinforcing the district’s commitment to accountability, value for money, and informed political oversight.
The District Engineer, Stephen Owino, stated that the road budget was UGX 244 million but was partially redirected to rebuild the washed-away Nyakabungo Bridge and the collapsed Kankoko–Kihembe Bridge, restoring vital community connections.
Despite the budget adjustment, Eng. Owino assured residents that the district has repaired its road equipment and that a water bowser will be deployed to manage dust during construction.
“We had Nyakabungo Bridge that had been washed away. We also had Kankoko–Kihembe Bridge that had collapsed. We used part of the money to do emergency works on those two bridges so that people can continue accessing services,” Eng. Owino explained.
Owino added that the reconstruction request for Kiziba Bridge has been submitted to the Ministry of Works and Transport, while the district plans phased road extensions in the 2027/2028 financial year.
District leadership reaffirms its commitment to quality on the Rutenga–Kinaba–Mpungu road, a flagship project transforming Kanungu District through better rural infrastructure and services.
