KAMPALA – The National Unity Platform (NUP) Vice President for Buganda, Muwanga Kivumbi, has been re-arrested and taken to an undisclosed destination after security forces intercepted him at a roadblock in Mpigi.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The re-arrest came shortly after Kivumbi delivered a fiery speech at his ancestral home in Butambala, where he made strong statements against President Museveni, First Lady Janet, and CDF Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Sources allege that investigators are examining what they describe as defamatory and inflammatory remarks made by Kivumbi during a rally where hundreds of supporters had gathered to celebrate his bail release.
Muwanga Kivumbi was arrested on January 21, 2026, and charged with terrorism offences in Butambala, before being released on bail Thursday, July 9, 2026, after 169 days on remand.
Kivumbi’s bail on treason charges, granted by the High Court’s International Crimes Division, sparked joyous celebrations across Butambala, with supporters waving NUP flags and chanting People Power slogans.
Upon his release, Kivumbi allegedly made controversial remarks about the First Family, while also questioning the funding of the Patriotic League of Uganda, an organisation linked to the General.
Investigators allege that Kivumbi told supporters he was heading to the party headquarters in Kampala to declare a new war against the regime, adding that prison had made him stronger, not weaker.
Opposition supporters have condemned Kivumbi’s arrest, accusing authorities of targeting him for exercising his freedom of expression, with some insisting the move has only given him a bigger platform.
Political analysts say the incident reflects the increasingly confrontational nature of Ugandan politics as the country nears another election, adding that strategy is as vital as courage in such battles.
Security agencies have yet to issue a detailed statement on the specific charges Kivumbi may face, though sources indicate detectives are examining whether his speech amounts to criminal defamation or incitement.
The re-arrest has dramatically shifted the political landscape, coming just hours after opposition supporters celebrated what they viewed as Kivumbi’s political comeback.
