RUBIRIZI, UGANDA – Rubirizi Police have launched a stringent enforcement campaign against reckless motorcycle riders, announcing severe penalties for those who violate traffic laws, especially during the ongoing school term.

The crackdown was emphasized by the Rubirizi Officer in Charge of Traffic Police, Richard Twebeze, who outlined the primary offences endangering lives in the district.

He specifically cautioned motorcyclists against drug abuse, reckless driving, operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol, over-speeding, and using mobile phones while riding.

Twebeze revealed that since the start of the year, 14 accidents have been recorded, a notable decrease from the 74 registered in the entirety of 2025.

However, he stressed that the situation remains alarming and requires immediate, collective action to reduce the dangerous habits that contribute to road accidents in the area.

“While we have seen a reduction from 74 accidents last year to 14 so far this year, even one accident is one too many. The common factors in these crashes are clear: speeding, alcohol, drugs, and distraction. This must stop. All motorcyclists must obey the law and cease these dangerous habits immediately,” stated Officer Twebeze.

He further appealed to passengers and residents to become active ambassadors for road safety by reporting reckless riders to the authorities, acting as crucial witnesses to support law enforcement efforts.

Twebeze warned that riders committing traffic offences will face the full force of the law, emphasizing that road safety is a shared responsibility.

“Road safety is a collective responsibility. I call upon every passenger and every resident of Rubirizi: be our eyes and ears. Report those who endanger lives. To the riders, your primary duty is to ensure your safety and that of your passengers,” emphasized Officer Twebeze.

The police operation is expected to intensify on major routes and near school zones as the new term gets underway, aiming to ensure the safety of students, parents, and all road users.
