The session aimed to prepare learners for the impending Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) by equipping them with essential examination techniques, boosting their confidence, and sharpening their academic skills.
The initiative, spearheaded by practicing Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) examiners from the district, including Mr. Zubair Muhwezi, Deputy Headteacher at Rugyenda Muslim Primary School, focused on assessing candidates’ knowledge, competence, and skills while pinpointing critical areas for improvement.
“The feedback from this training will be shared with headteachers, parents, and the pupils themselves to create a unified approach towards enhancing academic performance across our schools,” Mr. Muhwezi said.
He reported a marked improvement in learners’ performance since local UNEB examiners began organizing the workshops.
Muhwezi noted that while the area initially faced deep-rooted challenges like school dropouts and chronic absenteeism, positive collaboration between parents and local leaders was now addressing these issues.
Dr. Agaba Obed Byakureka, the LC5 NRM flag bearer for Rubirizi District, highlighted the role of the home environment in a child’s education, urging parents to fulfill their responsibilities.
“Parents should love their children, care for them, and ensure they attend school regularly. Education remains the most powerful key to breaking the cycle of poverty,” Agaba urged, citing a direct correlation between poor academic performance and factors like poverty, inadequate parenting, domestic violence, and substance abuse.
Asenath Bamureeba, Headmistress of Kirugu Secondary School and chief sponsor of the training, encouraged candidates to combine faith with discipline and hard work for success.
“Respect and discipline are the foundational blocks of knowledge and wisdom. Read your books seriously, prepare well for your exams, and trust in God for a bright future,” she advised.
The comprehensive training covered crucial topics, including new UNEB guidelines, career guidance and counseling, mentorship, and practical strategies for identifying and correcting common mistakes in examinations.
