KISORO, UGANDA – The Electoral Commission has reported a successful and encouraging start to the nomination of local leaders in Kisoro Municipality, with a significant number of aspirants cleared on the first day of the exercise.

Kisoro District Returning Officer, Daniel Nayebare, confirmed the progress on Monday, September 8, 226, announcing that 16 aspirants for LC IV councilor positions and two mayoral candidates were successfully nominated.

He described the initial turnout as very encouraging and expressed optimism that the number of nominees would continue to rise over the remaining days as the nationwide exercise to nominate municipal, city, division, and ward leaders continues.

However, Nayebare issued a firm caution to prospective candidates, stressing the strict deadline for the nomination exercise.

He emphasized that latecomers would not be accommodated once the nomination period concludes, noting that the three-day window is sufficient for all aspirants to present themselves.

He referenced a recent incident during the nomination of LC V aspirants for sub-counties, where several late arrivals were turned away despite pleas for consideration, as the law provides no exceptions.

“During the recent nomination of LC V aspirants for sub-counties, we had candidates who arrived late and pleaded to be nominated, but the law did not permit it. As a result, those who failed to arrive on time were left out. The same rule is being applied here; the deadline is firm,” Nayebare stated.

Meanwhile, the two nominated mayoral aspirants, Nambajimana Alex and John Mbonigaba, both pledged to prioritize infrastructure development as a central goal of their prospective administrations.

The nomination exercise concludes today, Wednesday, with the Electoral Commission urging all remaining aspirants to present themselves on time with the required documents to avoid disqualification.
