Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The disclosure came on Thursday, September 4, 2025, as Minister Magyezi responded to a petition from the Uganda Local Government Associations (ULGA) that raised critical issues affecting service delivery at the local government level.
Addressing Parliament, Minister Magyezi framed the procurement as a direct intervention to solve logistical challenges hindering local leaders from effectively overseeing government programs in their constituencies.
“Government has procured brand new vehicles, specifically Toyota Double Cabin pick-ups, for all District Chairpersons, City Mayors, and Municipal Mayors,” Magyezi stated.
The delivery process is already underway, with the first batch of 90 vehicles expected to arrive by the end of September 2025 and the final batch scheduled for November 2025.
The Minister extended his gratitude to the executive and legislative arms of government for their collaborative approval of the substantial expenditure, acknowledging their shared commitment to empowering local governance.
The funds were secured through a supplementary budget passed in April of this year, highlighting the project’s classification as a priority for the government.
“We thank H.E. the President, Cabinet, and Parliament for appropriating UGX 35.2 billion in the supplementary budget in April this year for this purpose,” Magyezi said.
The move directly responds to the ULGA petition, which highlighted obstacles like limited funding, inadequate resources, and poor infrastructure hindering the delivery of essential services such as healthcare, education, and road maintenance.
The government’s position, as articulated by Minister Magyezi, is that equipping local leaders with the necessary tools is a fundamental step toward improving overall governance and accountability at the grassroots level.
