The new facility, launched on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, is designed to help researchers and scientists protect their discoveries and turn them into real-world solutions.

The centre, established under a global initiative by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) of the United Nations, is the 38th of its kind to be launched in the country.

According to Dr. Samuel Okware, Director General of the Uganda National Health Research Organisation a TISC is a specialised centre designed to help inventors and researchers.

He confirmed that the centre provides scientists with access to high-quality technological information and teaches them how to protect their new ideas.

Scientists at the centre will receive training and resources in several key areas, including how to conduct patent searches, manage intellectual property, and understand the patent system.

Based at the Virus Research Institute, the new centre will focus on health research, starting with a workshop that gave researchers practical skills to use the intellectual property system for health discoveries.

The Executive Director of URSB, Ms. Mercy Kyomugasho Kainobwisho, hailed the launch as a significant milestone for advancing innovation in the country, empowering researchers at UVRI with the tools to transform their ideas into impactful solutions.

“URSB is thrilled to announce this launch. This is a significant milestone for advancing innovation and research in Uganda. We are empowering researchers and innovators at UVRI with the tools they need to transform their ideas into impactful solutions,” Ms. Kyomugasho said.

Protecting discoveries with patents allows researchers to control their inventions, paving the way for new businesses, jobs, and essential medicines or technologies for the people of Uganda.

Through the TISC platform, URSB will continue to strengthen the country’s ability to innovate, support new ideas, and help turn research into real economic growth for national development.
