The accident occurred at night on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at approximately 8:00 p.m. along the Arua road inside the renowned wildlife conservation area, Murchison Falls National Park.

Sources indicate that a Toyota Hiace (UA 20121AA) was ferrying seven URA officials who were returning to Kampala after completing official duties in Arua City when the driver struck a large elephant attempting to cross the highway.

The impact caused the driver to lose total control of the minibus, leading to a horrific crash that caused the death of three officials on the spot, leaving four others, including the driver, with serious injuries.

The Traffic Police Spokesperson, SP Kananura Michael, confirmed to the press that emergency Police teams responded swiftly to the distress call.

The injured survivors were rushed to Kiryandongo Hospital for immediate medical attention. Due to the severity of their wounds, the four victims were later transferred to Kampala for further specialized management.

The bodies of the three deceased officials have since been conveyed to Anaka Hospital Mortuary, where postmortem examinations are pending as families prepare for the painful task of identification.

SP Kananura has passionately appealed to motorists navigating the country’s highways to exercise extreme caution in national parks and wildlife-protected areas.

“We strongly urge drivers to exercise extreme caution while traveling through national parks and wildlife-protected areas. Animals often cross unexpectedly, especially during night hours. Motorists must strictly observe speed limits and remain vigilant to avoid such heartbreaking and preventable incidents,” Kananura warned.

The URA is expected to release an official statement regarding the loss of its staff members as the investigation into the exact circumstances of the crash continues.
