Reliable sources allege that Amanya Samuel paddled a canoe from Katoma to Itambira Island and arrived safely, but on his return he found the canoe had been taken from where he had docked it.
Stranded without a canoe and determined to reach the other side, the deceased reportedly chose to swim across the deep waters between Itambira and Bwama Islands, a fateful decision that tragically proved fatal.
The Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, confirmed the incident, noting that the findings indicated that the young student was unable to complete the swim and drowned between the two islands.
Tumushime added that the Police Marine Unit, working alongside local divers, responded swiftly to the scene and successfully retrieved the body from the waters.
“We convey our sincere condolences to the family, school administration and fellow students, while appealing to parents, guardians, school administration and communities to caution students against swimming in deep waters of Lake Bunyonyi without adult supervision and life-saving jackets,” SP Tumushime remarked.
Police have since opened a formal inquiry to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy, while conveying heartfelt sympathies to the family, school administration, and fellow students affected by the loss.
