NRM’s  Jacob Oboth Oboth Elected as Speaker of  12th Parliament.

KAMPALA. The 12th Parliament of Uganda has officially commenced with election of NRM’s  Jacob Marksons Oboth as Speaker.

The Election held today  at the Kololo Independence Grounds was  presided over by Chief Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija. 

The ceremony began with the Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesigye, reminding Members of Parliament (MPs) of the rules of procedure,  guidelines and eligibility criteria.

 Vice President  and Katakwi Woman MP Maj. Rtd. Jesca Alupo,  nominated West Budama MP and outgoing Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs, Jackson Oboth. She praised his distinguished career in legal practice, legislative experience, and patriotism, emphasizing his suitability for the role.

Katikamu South MP Frank Tumwebaze seconded Oboth’s nomination, highlighting his leadership credentials and extensive experience in public service. 

On the other side, Jinja East MP Paul Mwiru was nominated by Katikamu South MP Hassan Kirumira, with Jinja City Woman MP Sarah Lwansasula seconding the motion.

The election culminated in a decisive victory for Jacob Marksons Oboth, who secured 441 votes, while Mwiru garnered 60 votes, and Norbert Mao received 15 votes. The Chief Justice announced the outcome and declared Oboth as the new Speaker of the 12th Parliament.

CUE IN…ZEIJA DECLARES OBOTH OBOTH. 

The day’s proceedings also saw the election of the Deputy Speaker. Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, the MP for Ruhinda North, who was declared winner after beating opponents Nyakato Asinansi and Sarah Aguti with 457 votes against 45 and 14, respectively. Tayebwa took his oath of office and was handed the instruments of power, marking the beginning of his tenure.

Following his election, Oboth took the oath of office before President Yoweri Museveni, receiving the traditional instruments of power, including the Mace, the national flag, the Constitution, and the rules of procedure. In his inaugural speech, the new Speaker committed to fostering accountability, dignity, and unity among MPs, aiming to restore public trust in Parliament.

Oboth Oboth attributed his landslide victory to faithfulness and strategic patience. He emphasized the importance of prompt accountability interventions for public resources and called for high standards of conduct among MPs.

In his Speech after re-election, Tayebwa thanked the MPs and his NRM Party for entrusting him with continuing as Deputy Speaker. He called upon the MPs to join him in supporting the Government’s Poverty alleviation programs through relevant legislation and  budget appropriations.

Meanwhile, President Museveni congratulated the 12th Parliament upon successfully holding the election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker. He challenged the Mps to join him in he active fight against Poverty, especially through supporting the Parish Development Model – PDM. He vowed to sack Ministers who do not express commitment to ensuring that the PDM Program works in their Constituencies.
