The deceased has been identified as Namara Perfect, 19, a resident of Kirundo Village, Kasharara Parish, in Kirundo Sub-County, Kisoro District.

The incident occurred on the evening of Monday, February 2nd, 2026, at approximately 7:00 PM, casting a pall of mourning over the quiet village.

It is reported that the victim was inside a house with her father, George Bitwite, and a sister-in-law, Gloria Tuyisishimye, when a lightning strike hit the homestead, rendering all three unconscious.

According to Kigezi Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the lightning struck during a severe storm. The father, upon regaining consciousness, discovered his daughter had tragically passed away.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm this incident. Initial findings suggest the lightning struck the homestead, affecting several individuals,” stated Elly Maate.

Maate confirmed that officers promptly visited the scene to commence investigations after the tragedy was reported at Kirundo Police Station by Mr. George Irinatwe.

Police indicated that the body remained at the scene as arrangements were made for a postmortem to determine the exact cause of death. Inquiries into the full circumstances are ongoing.

Authorities have urged the public to exercise extreme caution during thunderstorms, advising residents to avoid handling electrical appliances, using wired devices, and standing near windows or in open shelters.
