The area’s LC1 Chairperson, Mr. Busingye Elisamu, confirmed to this reporter that the lack of clean water has been a source of significant hardship, leading to health concerns and waterborne diseases.
He added that the problem has persisted for over 50 years, with families grappling to secure water a challenge residents are now addressing through collective Burungi Bwansi work.
He extended profound gratitude to Hon. Cadet Benjamin Buturo, the NRM MP Flagbearer for Bunyaruguru County, for his relentless lobbying and leadership.
“Our people are uniting through Burungi Bwansi to tackle water scarcity, and for this I want to thank Hon. Cadet Benjamin, who has been advocating and supporting us to be involved in these community activities,” Busingye stated.
Ms. Kenema Rosemary, Women’s Chairperson for Kyigabiro Village, reported that unsafe water from Lake Kyema poses serious health risks to residents.
She added that the crisis leads to domestic violence and high rates of school dropouts, especially among girls, and praised Hon. Cadet Benjamin Buturo as an advocate for water solutions.
“Water scarcity in our area has contributed to high rates of school dropouts, with our children, mostly girls, spending hours fetching water instead of attending school, while household tensions flare over the scarcity,” Rosemary stated.
Residents Kyomugisha Olivia and Tushabe Oscar credited Hon. Cadet Benjamin Buturo for improving water access, saying it will create new opportunities for youth.
Tushabe Oscar stressed, “No water, no life,” while Kyomugisha Olivia explained that reliable water will allow activities like brick-making and ease the burden of fetching water from far away.
The community of Kyigabiro stands as an inspiring example, demonstrating that even the most entrenched challenges can be met with unity, perseverance, and shared purpose.
