KABALE – The Kigezi sub-region is gripped by fear following a fresh wave of violence that has claimed two lives in separate murder incidents in Rubanda and Kabale districts, placing the region’s security under sharp scrutiny.

The alarming events, occurring within hours of each other, have reignited concerns that the region is struggling to shake off its reputation as a hotspot for violent crime.

SP Nelson Tumushime, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, stated in an exclusive interview with this reporter that they have in custody one Ainamani Enock in connection with the murder incident in Rubanda District.

He confirmed that Enock is allegedly in the know of the death of Ainembabazi Stephen, 21, a resident of Kiruruma Cell, Ihanga Parish in Bubaare Sub-County in Rubanda District.

Sources alleged that, on Monday July 27th 2026, at about 10:00 PM, at Ihanga trading centre, Kiruruma Cell, the deceased and others still at large developed a quarrel which resulted in serious fighting.

During the scuffle, the victim was fatally stabbed in the chest and succumbed to his injuries on the spot, with one suspect already in custody as efforts are being put by police to trace other assailants still at large.

Just a few kilometers away in Kabale District, Police have confirmed the arrest of Byomuhangi Habert on allegations of murdering his biological mother, in a tragic case of domestic violence.

The incident, which also occurred on Monday at around 9:00 PM in Nyamabale Village, saw the suspect allegedly assault his biological mother Kyarimpa Mary, 52, leading to her death.

Both tragic incidents are part of a deeply troubling pattern of violent crime that has increasingly plagued the Kigezi region, raising urgent concerns among residents and authorities alike.

Earlier in July, police launched a manhunt for assailants who hacked a teenage girl to death in Rubanda, while Kabale recorded a separate mob justice killing over suspected theft.

SP Nelson Tumushime has vehemently condemned the recent acts and urgently appealed to the public to refrain from vigilantism and instead pursue lawful avenues for justice.

“We encourage members of the public to avoid taking the law into their hands and use the available legal means to address their grievances,” SP Tumushime stated.

Meanwhile, as Kigezi region endures a troubling resurgence of deadly violence, both residents and authorities have been urged to join forces to bring an immediate halt to the bloodshed.
