According to Mr. Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, officers from Lubowa Police Station acted swiftly on the credible intelligence that led them to the unusual hiding spot.
“The operation was intelligence-led. Our officers proceeded to a sweet potato garden in Sseguku Zone 5, where they discovered a white sack branded ‘Kakira Sugar’ concealed within the plantation. Upon inspection, the sack was found to contain 30 different motor vehicle number plates, all suspected to have been stolen,” Onyango stated.
The recovery points to a possible racket involved in the theft and redistribution of number plates, which are often used to disguise stolen vehicles or in the commission of other criminal activities.
Onyango confirmed that while no arrests have yet been made, investigations are actively ongoing and the recovered number plates are being held at Lubowa Police Station to be reunited with their rightful owners.
“Statements have been recorded from relevant witnesses to aid our investigations. The process of tracing the individuals behind this is now underway,” Onyango added.
Onyango urged individuals who reported stolen number plates to come forward and commended the public’s tip-off, underscoring the critical role of community cooperation in fighting crime.
