The Kalangala District Woman MP by-election was triggered by the tragic passing of the sitting MP, Hellen Nakimuli, who died on April 19, 2026, at Alexandra Medical Centre in Kitante, Kampala.
The 12th Parliament MP-elect had undergone surgery to treat uterine fibroids but sadly succumbed to complications, leaving the constituency seat vacant and setting the stage for the fiercely contested race.
Meanwhile, the elected Hon. Idah Nabayiga was previously defeated by the late MP Nakimuli to become the Women’s Representative for Kalangala District in the 12th Parliament of Uganda.
Prior to the by-election exercise kicking off on Wednesday, the Electoral Commission dispatched polling materials overnight to the respective island polling centres.
The exercise commenced at 12:30 a.m., ensuring that all election materials reached the 115 polling stations in time for the commencement of polling at 7:00 a.m.
The Kalangala District Woman MP by-election saw 45,246 registered voters across 115 polling stations, with women comprising a significant 57.94% (26,218) of the electorate compared to 42.06% (19,028) men.
The poll, held on June 24, featured a five-candidate race, including NRM flag bearer Idah Nabayiga, NUP’s Nampala Irene, and three independents, Babirye Sharifah, Nagawa Hellen Flavia, and Nasuuna Agnes.
