Recent incidents in Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda highlight the region’s growing trend of authoritarianism.

Tanzania

Former Tanzanian MP and CHADEMA party vice-chair Tundu Lissu was arrested on April 9, 2025, and charged with sedition and incitement for criticizing government repression and the 2020 elections.

Lissu was detained after a peaceful rally in Mbinga advocating for electoral reforms.

His court appearance on May 19, 2025, drew attention from regional observers, including Kenyan former Minister of Justice Martha Karua, who was deported from Tanzania for allegedly trying to destabilize the country.

Uganda

Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye was arrested on November 16, 2024, after being abducted in Nairobi, Kenya.

Besigye faces charges related to security and unlawful possession of firearms, as well as treason for allegedly plotting against the government.

His lawyer, Martha Karua, faced challenges obtaining a temporary practicing certificate from the Uganda Law Council but was eventually granted one on January 6, 2025.

Rwanda

Rwandan opposition leaders have also faced persecution.

Victoire Ingabire was arrested in 2010 and sentenced to 15 years in prison for conspiracy to undermine the government and denying the genocide. She was released in 2018 after serving eight years.

Diane Rwigara, another opposition leader, was blocked from challenging President Paul Kagame in the 2017 election and arrested along with family members.

Regional ReactionThe arrests have sparked widespread condemnation from human rights activists and civil society groups.

Kenyan Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi defended Kenya’s involvement in Besigye’s arrest, citing national interests and regional cooperation.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has vowed to prevent anyone trying to destabilize the country.

The crackdown on opposition leaders in East Africa raises concerns about the region’s democratic future.

As elections approach in some countries, the treatment of opposition figures will be closely watched.

The international community has a crucial role in promoting democracy and human rights in the region.
