LWENGO, UGANDA – A tragic road crash along the Masaka-Mbarara Highway in the early hours of Saturday, 27th December 2025, has left the Rukiga District community mourning the loss of seven members of the same family.

The deceased are father Niwagaba Ivan, 38; his wife Ainebyoona Brenda, 37; their four children Agaba Keith, 10, Atuheire Keisha, 8, Masiko Kenen, 5, and Agaba Keron, 2; and Ivan’s brother Turihobwe Sayuni, 39.

The horrific crash occurred in the Njagalakasayi area of Lwengo District, involving the family’s Toyota Fielder (UBH 476W), driven by the deceased Ivan, which collided head-on with a Fuso Fighter truck (UBP 510V).

Reliable sources indicate the Toyota Fielder was traveling from the Masaka direction and attempted to overtake a line of vehicles. In the process, it collided head-on with the oncoming Fuso truck, with the impact proving fatal for all occupants of the car.

Sources further indicate the family were residents of Izoongo-Kijongo Cell, Kyogo Parish, in Kamwezi Sub-County, Rukiga District and were on a trip for a thanksgiving ceremony for one Tibamwenda James and to baptize their child.

Following the crash, Traffic Police Spokesperson Michael Kananura sternly appealed to all motorists, emphasizing the dangers of reckless overtaking, particularly at night when visibility is poor.

“Preliminary investigations point to a fatal error in judgment while overtaking. We call upon all drivers to exercise extreme patience, avoid risky maneuvers, and adhere to road safety regulations,” stated Kananura.

He further urged drivers to limit non-essential night travel and ensure they are adequately rested before embarking on long journeys to prevent fatigue-related accidents, which remain a leading cause of road fatalities.

The bodies of the deceased were transported to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem examination as investigations into the exact cause of the crash continue.

The news has sent shockwaves through the Rukiga community and beyond, as relatives, friends, and neighbors grapple with the unimaginable loss of an entire family unit.
