RUBAARE, NTUNGAMO – Residents of Rubaare Town Council in Ntungamo District have attributed the current wave of panga-wielding incidents in the area to an increase in unemployed strangers.

The worrying situation follows the recent shocking murder of the village LC1 chairperson, the late Simon Buruma, who was in his 60s. He was hacked to death with a machete at his home by unknown assailants.

The attack occurred on the night of Wednesday, November 12, 2025, in Kagongi Cell, Kagango Ward, Rubaare Town Council.

This incident follows other violent acts, including an attack on Rubaare-based Radio Thunder FM journalist Alex Akankwasa, also known as Owenjoki, who was attacked and robbed of his items, including money and phones, among other things, in May this year.

Speaking from his experience, Akankwasa confirmed that the attackers inflicted serious injuries on his shoulders and feet, stating that if not for his resilience, the outcome would have been worse.

“In May, I was attacked by a gang with machetes. They not only robbed me of my phone and 139,000 shillings, but they also robbed me of my sense of security. The machete wounds on my shoulders and feet are a constant, painful reminder of that brutal attack,” said Alex Akankwasa.

Another victim, councilor Mulishid Nayebare of Akatojo Ward, said he was attacked in July at Secret Bar and Lodges by seven assailants armed with pangas, who inflicted injuries on him and his fellows.

Hon. Nayebare is urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with the police, revealing that many in Rubaare have been attacked by machete-wielding assailants, with numerous victims dying from their injuries.

“Seven assailants with pangas attacked us at Secret Bar and Lodges in July, leaving me with injuries. This violence is a plague on our community,” said Mulishid.

Residents of Rubaare are demanding justice and living in terror as escalating machete attacks claim lives and create a climate of fear throughout the town council and its environs.

So far, the police are engaging with local communities to establish village security committees and vigilante teams to combat the issue.
