BUSHENYI – The long-awaited upgrade of Kyabugimbi Health Centre IV into a full-fledged district hospital has officially been launched, ushering in a transformative era for healthcare in Bushenyi district.

The function to launch the upgrade was held Friday, May 29th, 2026 at the greater Bushenyi sub-region headquarters, attended by different district and other government officials.

The upgrade promises to transform the facility from a referral centre into a modern hospital, directly addressing the life-saving needs of thousands of mothers and children in the region.

The event saw the handover of the construction mandate to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), a move designed to ensure speed, integrity, and military-grade quality following the President’s stamp on the facility upgrade.

Major Chris Guma, who is the head of the construction team, delivered a commitment to delivering a world-class facility for the people of Igara East within the stipulated timeframe.

“As the UPDF guarantees one thing for the people of Igara East: speed without compromise. My team and I will deliver a world-class facility within the stipulated timeframe, because every day we wait is another mother’s life we could have saved,” stated Maj. Chris Guma.

Bushenyi Woman MP Hon. Katusiime Annet Mugisha has announced that the elevation of Kyabugimbi Health Centre IV from a referral centre into a modern hospital will directly address the life-saving needs of thousands of mothers and children across the region.

The upgraded facility will feature a fully equipped operating theatre, a dedicated modern maternity ward, a revamped outpatient department, and doctors’ accommodation with administrative offices to keep medical staff on-site around the clock.

“For years, our mothers have traveled miles in labor pains, only to reach a facility without a theatre or a proper ward. This modern hospital with its operating theatre, maternity ward, and doctors’ accommodation means that in Bushenyi, giving birth will no longer be a gamble with death but a celebration of life,” Hon. Katusiime stated.

Hon. Katusiime expressed her joy that the community’s long-standing cry for better services has finally been answered, declaring that no mother in Bushenyi should lose her life simply because she is giving birth.

The in-charge of maternal health at Kyabugimbi, Dr. Nobert Byaruhanga, revealed that the facility currently receives over 300 expectant mothers every month, with at least 60 of them requiring Caesarean sections, a procedure the existing infrastructure struggles to support efficiently.

He noted that they receive mothers from outside Bushenyi, from Sheema, Rubirizi, Buhweju, and Mitooma districts, thanking the upgrade gearing team for their relentless advocacy, emphasizing that this upgrade will save hundreds of lives annually.

“We are overwhelmed. Mothers are not only coming from Bushenyi but also from Sheema, Rubirizi, Buhweju, and Mitooma districts. This upgrade will save hundreds of lives annually. We thank Hon. Katusiime for her relentless advocacy,” Dr. Byaruhanga said.

Residents and local leaders led by Jonathan Agumamitwe have lavished praise on Hon. Katusiime and all who supported the project, applauding them for prioritizing life-saving health infrastructure over political rhetoric.

The community also expressed profound gratitude to the government under President Museveni for listening to their concerns and responding with a tangible solution.
