Kampala, Uganda – The 2024 annual crime report has indicated a significant increase in road crashes and fire incidents last year, highlighting alarming trends in road safety and fire incidents.

Pedestrian collisions made up 19.5% of all crashes, while rear-end collisions, head-on collisions, angle collisions, and single-vehicle crashes, as well as side swipes, accounted for 16.2%, 17.7%, 13%, 10.5%, and 9%, respectively.
Incidents involving vehicles hitting parked vehicles, objects on the road, objects off the road, and animals accounted for smaller percentages.
The report also revealed a 13.8% increase in reported fires, from 1,104 in 2023 to 1,280 in 2024.
The Fire and Rescue Services handled 1,150 cases, while 120 were resolved before their arrival, and 10 were false alarms.
The majority of fires (67%) occurred between 6:00 am and 12:00 pm, while 33% happened between 12:01 am and 6:00 am.
Residential buildings and makeshift structures were the most common locations for fires, with 300 and 250 incidents, respectively. School fires saw a 9% increase, from 50 cases in 2023 to 55 cases in 2024.
