KAMPALA – The leadership of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has dramatically reversed its earlier endorsement of Anita Annet Among and Thomas Tayebwa for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament.

The announcement was issued in a letter dated May 12, 2026, by the PLU Secretary General and Member of Parliament for Kasambya County, Hon. David Kabanda, reversing the PLU party declaration from earlier this year.

Kabanda stated that party chairman Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has withdrawn the endorsement of Anita Among and Thomas Tayebwa for Speaker and Deputy Speaker with immediate effect.

The reversal came barely 24 hours after a March 11 letter endorsed the two lawmakers for the top parliamentary positions. Kabanda confirmed that the PLU chairman now considers the earlier decision no longer tenable.

“The Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has guided that the endorsement of Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa as candidates for Speaker and Deputy Speaker, respectively, for the 12th Parliament of Uganda is retracted and withdrawn with immediate effect,” Kabanda confirmed.

The PLU leader directed its members-elect to wait for direction from the highest authority, in a significant shift realigning the group with the ruling establishment.

Kabanda added that the Patriotic League of Uganda encourages its members to support the candidates presented to them by the President for Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

The Secretary General also emphasized the group’s unwavering loyalty to its chairman, insisting they follow Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s command, instructions, and guidance at all times.

“The Patriotic League of Uganda is encouraging its successful elected MPs to support the candidates that will be presented to them by H.E. the President for the position of Speaker and Deputy Speaker. We follow the command, instructions, and guidance of our Chairman Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba at all times,” Kabanda added.

The about-turn comes just as Parliament prepares to elect its leadership for the upcoming term, leaving political analysts and MPs-elect speculating as to whom the top leaders will now front for the two top parliamentary seats.
