KAMPALA – The Kabale Municipality Member of Parliament, Hon. Andrew Aja Baryayanga, has called for enhanced road infrastructure in Kabale to position the municipality for its imminent elevation to tourism city status.

The legislator made these remarks on Wednesday on the floor of Parliament during the debate on the President’s State of the Nation Address, as he articulated constituency concerns in response to government priorities.

During the session, presided over by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, MP Aja Baryayanga praised the government for the three-phased power station in Rubanda, which will supply electricity to the planned iron ore factory and drive local economic transformation.

He further observed that while the iron ore project and the rich tourism heritage in Kigezi position the region for rapid growth, the existing infrastructure urgently requires significant upgrades to sustain that momentum.

“The iron ore factory, coupled with our abundant tourism heritage in the Kigezi sub-region, positions this area at the epicenter of rapid growth. However, our infrastructure demands immediate and substantial attention to match this potential,” Baryayanga stated.

MP Aja Baryayanga noted that Kabale and the greater Kigezi region form a major tourism hub, home to world-renowned attractions like Lake Bunyonyi, Mgahinga, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which draw thousands of visitors each year.

He further stressed that these sites require significant investment in road connectivity, as improved accessibility would unlock the region’s full tourism potential and drive broader economic growth.

“These sites attract large numbers of people and require significant attention in improving road connectivity,” Baryayanga noted.

Notably, the legislator called upon the government to fulfill its long-standing pledge to establish the proposed Nyamiringa Airstrip in the Kigezi sub-region.

He argued that such a facility would serve as a catalyst for economic growth, providing better access for business and cargo transportation, and connecting the region directly to Kampala and beyond.

The Nyamiringa Airstrip, proposed in Rubanda District, has been a persistent request from local leaders and residents, who view it as essential for opening up the region to tourists and investors alike.

During the 2026 memoranda to the government, Kabale and Rubanda leaders also requested air transport facilities at Nyamiringa and Batuma, or alternatively, the re-establishment of the Butobere Airstrip to secure better connectivity.

The MP’s parliamentary intervention adds momentum to the growing chorus of voices advocating for accelerated development in one of Uganda’s most picturesque yet under-connected regions.
