One Game at a Time: Ochan Keeps Volcanoes Grounded Amidst Cup and League Ambitions

KISORO, UGANDA – The coaching staff of SC Volcanoes has attributed the club’s impressive run of form and remarkable consistency to the unwavering support and strong leadership provided by the entire team management.

Head coach Patrick Ochan addressed the media after the team’s final training session at Mashaka Playground on Friday, where the squad sharpened its focus on carrying their winning momentum forward in both league and cup competitions.

The Kisoro-based side’s training session came as the team geared up for a crucial Western Region League fixture against Rwenshama, followed by a high-stakes Stanbic Uganda Cup assignment next week.

In his remarks, Ochan publicly credited the club’s impressive form to the steadfast support from club president Dr. Martin Mbonye and team captain Arthur Mugisha Rucakatsi, popularly known as Bubu.

Ochan, a renowned Ugandan professional football legend, emphasized that the club’s stability and the players’ daily motivation are direct results of the hands-on approach taken by the leadership.

He described Dr. Mbonye as far from a distant figurehead, noting that the president is actively involved in the team’s daily affairs.

Ochan attributed the squad’s recent strong performances to the president’s regular check-ins and camp support, which he said fuels player motivation alongside the high intensity demanded in training.

“Dr. Mbonye checks on the team regularly and supports the camp routine. That alone keeps the players motivated every single day. Combined with the intensity we demand in training, that is the engine behind our recent strong performances,” Ochan stated.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Ochan described the home fixture against Rwenshama as a must-win encounter while stressing that the team approaches every game with the same level of respect and importance, regardless of the opposition.

On the injury front, Ochan provided a positive update on the squad, confirming the team is in good shape with no major concerns.

“There are no major injury concerns. Only Ronaldo is nursing minor knocks, while Sanny is temporarily away due to family matters but is expected back soon. The rest of the squad remains fit and available,” he confirmed.

Ochan also unveiled three new signings, Emma, Bernard (a centre-back), and Ikuza (a left-back), who have been training with the squad for the past ten days.

He confirmed that the trio’s potential debut against Rwenshama hinges on final clearance from league bodies, expressing optimism that the paperwork would be finalized before kickoff. “There is about a 70–80 percent chance they could feature in the match,” Ochan noted.

Looking beyond the league, SC Volcanoes face a mouth-watering Stanbic Uganda Cup tie against Tapoh FC in Ngora District on February 27.

However, Ochan was quick to stress a game-by-game philosophy to ensure the team does not get ahead of itself. “Football is played one match at a time. This weekend’s game against Rwenshama is our full focus. After that, we reset and prepare for the Uganda Cup,” he asserted.

Ochan acknowledged the significant challenge posed by Tapoh FC, who famously eliminated Uganda Premier League side Buhimba United Saints FC in the previous round.

Acknowledging the long journey to the northeast and the hotter conditions that await his team, Ochan welcomed the physical and mental test as part of the club’s growth, noting that such challenges become routine when aiming for the bigger leagues.
