KAMPALA, UGANDA – The Electoral Commission (EC) is today, Tuesday, 17th February 2026, conducting a crucial polling day for voters in specific areas across the country where local government elections were previously incomplete or not conducted.

The development was confirmed at the beginning of this month by the EC Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, announcing the final electoral process for various positions at the City/District, Municipality, and Sub County levels.

According to the Electoral Commission, the repeat or residual elections will cover 73 affected electoral areas where polling was initially scheduled for earlier dates but was halted due to unforeseen circumstances.

Among the most high-profile races to be concluded is the election for the Butebo District Chairperson, a position that remained unfilled after the previous polling round.

Voters will head to polling stations across the affected areas to elect leaders for positions ranging from District Chairpersons to Councillors representing Special Interest Groups like Youth and Persons with Disabilities.

Polling is set to commence at 7:00 a.m. and close at 4:00 p.m. at all designated polling stations and specified electoral college venues across the affected areas, the EC has directed.

Chairperson Byabakama urged all political parties, candidates, and voters to maintain peace and comply with electoral laws to ensure the process is concluded successfully.

The Commission has assured the public that all necessary materials and personnel are in place to facilitate a smooth voting exercise in the affected areas.
