RUKUNGIRI – The High Court sitting in Rukungiri has further adjourned the hearing of an election petition filed by Hon. Sam Arinaitwe Kajojo, challenging the election of Dr. Chris Baryomunsi as Member of Parliament for Kinkizi East Constituency, to December 16, 2026.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!The former Kanungu District LC5 Chairperson, Sam Kajojo, through his lawyers from Ngaruye Ruhindi Company and Advocates, is challenging the results of the January 15, 2026 parliamentary election, alleging that the electoral process was marred by irregularities.
During court proceedings presided over by Justice Richard Wejuli Wabwire, Kajojo appeared with his 44 sureties as required in connection with the affidavits filed in the petition.
The respondent, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, also strongly presented his side of the case through his able legal team, filing detailed affidavits in response to the various complaints raised in the petition.
However, to the disappointment of the petitioner’s side, the court did not proceed with questioning the sureties as had been eagerly anticipated.
Justice Wabwire instead directed the parties to follow a schedule for filing and exchanging the outstanding documents and submissions before the case proceeds to the next stage.
Lawyer Mwesigwa Rukutana, who represented Dr. Baryomunsi, told journalists after the court session that their legal team is ready and that the affidavits contain the complaints and responses the court will consider.
Rukutana maintained that their side is confident Dr. Chris Baryomunsi won the election, adding that they will wait for the court to consider the evidence presented by both parties in the affidavits.

Dr. Baryomunsi, who is also the Minister of ICT and National Guidance and incumbent Member of Parliament for Kinkizi East, was represented in the presence of his wife, Mrs. Fosca Baryomunsi, following the duties assigned to him by the President.
Meanwhile, petitioner Sam Kajojo Arinaitwe said he had appeared in court with his sureties, expecting them to be given an opportunity to respond to issues contained in the petition.
He noted that some of the complaints before court relate to alleged irregularities and alleged vote theft, adding that his side has evidence, including video recordings, which he wants the court to consider.

Kajojo said he had hoped for a shorter case, maintained that he believes he won the Kinkizi East parliamentary election, and accused the respondent of delaying the case, a claim the respondent’s side disputes.
His lawyer, Boniface Ngaruye Ruhindi, said their legal team is fully prepared and ready to proceed with the case, and would strictly comply with all the directions issued by the court without fail.

According to the schedule set during court proceedings, the petitioner’s side is expected to file its summary submissions on October 12, 2026, while the respondent’s side is expected to respond by October 30.
Further documents are expected to be filed in November, with both parties expected to complete their submissions before the matter returns to court.
