RUKUNGIRI – Authorities in Rukungiri District and Rukungiri Municipality have flagged off the last-mile delivery of 229,500 insecticide-treated mosquito nets, in a renewed effort to reduce malaria-related deaths across the region.

The ceremony, held at the Rukungiri District headquarters, was presided over by the RDC Bron Kikanshemeza, alongside district leaders including the District Chairperson, the district Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), and officials from the District Health Office.

The consignment comprises 4,590 bales of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, with each bale packed with 50 nets, bringing the grand total to 229,500 life-saving protective tools destined for households across the district.

These life-saving tools will be distributed across 105 parishes in Rukungiri District and Rukungiri Municipality, with allocations carefully determined based on the population size of each parish.

Speaking shortly after receiving the nets, RDC Bron Kikanshemeza emphasized the government’s sustained investment in the campaign, noting that malaria remains one of the leading causes of illness and death, particularly among children and pregnant women.

The RDC decried the unacceptable misuse of mosquito nets by some residents who turn them into ropes for restraining livestock, a practice that seriously undermines the government’s malaria eradication efforts.

He urged all residents to use the nets solely for their intended purpose, directing parish and sub-county chiefs, and GISOs to securely store the consignment until the announcement of the official household distribution dates.

Rukungiri District Health Officer Dr. Akasiima Mucunguzi said the district is receiving and dispatching nets to lower units under the last-mile arrangement, with household distribution awaiting official communication from the Ministry.

Dr. Mucunguzi underscored that every net counts in the fight against malaria, emphasizing the immense importance of the exercise in safeguarding communities across Rukungiri.

The Mayor of Rukungiri Municipality, Boaz Kansiime Matiita, also addressed the gathering, appealing to residents to properly use and care for the mosquito nets once they receive them.

He encouraged beneficiaries to seek guidance from distribution teams on the correct use and maintenance of the nets to ensure they remain effective for a long time.

Mayor Matiita advised families without beds to find safe and appropriate ways of hanging the nets so that every household member can sleep under them and be protected from malaria.

“As we receive these nets, let us remember that they represent life; each net is a shield against a disease that has claimed too many lives,” he said.

Uganda, through the Ministry of Health and development partners, conducts nationwide mass distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets every three years, demonstrating unwavering commitment to ensuring households are protected against malaria.
