RUBANDA – Residents of Hamuhambo Town Council have celebrated the commissioning of a new water well, a gift that ends decades of suffering and transforms a long-forgotten community that once shared a pond with animals.

Ruhasya Village LC1 Chairperson Mugasha Venence, visibly emotional, described Hamuhambo Town Council as a water-scarce area desperate for more government and leader attention.
He added that children will no longer walk miles for dirty water and mothers will no longer fear for their families’ health, while calling on leaders to prioritize the basic needs of the people they serve.
“Our Town Council is a water-scarce area that desperately needs more attention from the government and leaders. I can reliably confirm that our young ones will no longer walk miles to fetch dirty water. Our mothers will no longer fear for their families’ health,” Mugasha said.
Denis Mbabazi recalled the painful memory of drinking cloudy, insect-infested water that animals had contaminated, knowing it could make their children sick but having no choice.
He stressed that while everyone knew the water was unsafe and contaminated by animals, they had no alternative except to consume it or face dehydration.
“It was unsafe for domestic use. We knew we were drinking water that animals had waded through, but we had no choice. It was either that or go thirsty,” said Mbabazi.
Mbabazi added that the pond further sowed discord, as daily fights over the scarce, dirty water pitted families against one another and gradually eroded the community’s unity.
Councilor Francine Turyazayo, who championed this initiative, revealed that her journey to secure clean water for Ruhasya started with a simple survey of water-scarce areas in the town council.
She established that Ruhasya Village residents were suffering the most, recalling her visit to the pond where she discovered insects floating in the water and realized that people were being forced to drink what was unfit for human consumption.
“When I visited that pond myself, I observed small insects floating in the water. It was heartbreaking to see that human beings, our own people, were being forced to consume that. It was not safe for human consumption,” Turyazayo recounted.
Francine noted that the project responds to Chairman Stephen Kasyaba’s call for councilors to serve their areas well, thus urging leaders to join the collective effort for their people’s welfare.
The district councilor pledged to continue championing access to clean and safe water across the Town Council and Bubare Sub County, recognizing that water is the foundation of health, dignity, and economic progress.
