RUKUNGIRI – The North Kigezi Diocese, under the Church of Uganda, has issued a strong rebuttal against viral social media claims that grossly misrepresented a sermon by its Bishop regarding unmarried teachers.

The clarification was issued in a press release on June 16, 2026, signed by the North Kigezi Diocesan Secretary, Rev. Munturiye NshabaRuhanga.

The Diocese clarified that a circulating online headline about Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe ordering a crackdown on unmarried teachers and the expulsion of parents with children born outside marriage is vague, misleading, and factually inaccurate.

The controversy stems from a sermon Bishop Asiimwe delivered on June 14, 2026, during the 42nd Anniversary celebration of Kinyasano Girls Secondary School.

According to the Diocese, the Bishop’s message focused on upholding Christian moral standards within Church of Uganda-founded institutions, particularly regarding teachers who are cohabiting without the sanctity of marriage.

The press release clarified that the Bishop’s concern was specifically with cohabiting teachers in Church-founded schools, not unmarried teachers in general.

He encouraged them to solemnize their marriages in the Church and reaffirmed a strong commitment to protecting students from sexual harassment.

“The Bishop was not speaking about all unmarried teachers, but only those living together without marriage in Church schools. He asked them to get married in the Church, and he also promised to keep students safe from harassment,” Rev. Munturiye wrote.

The Diocese strongly condemned the twisting of the Bishop’s words, saying the sermon was never against unmarried teachers or parents with children born outside marriage.

Rev. NshabaRuhanga called for responsible journalism and urged the public and media to present facts accurately, as the real issue was about Christian witness, moral example, and upholding the values of Church-founded schools.

Meanwhile, the Diocese also reiterated its commitment to dialogue and pastoral guidance in addressing moral issues within its institutions.
