RUBIRIZI – The Bunyaruguru County MP, Hon. Cadet Benjamin Buturo, has connected villages around Ndekye in Rubirizi District to the national water grid, delivering clean, piped water directly to the community.

The 6 million Uganda Shillings water project, funded by Hon. Cadet Benjamin Buturo, now provides safe, clean water to over 500 residents across Kikuba and neighboring villages.

The area has allegedly endured hardship, with women and children walking miles daily and others losing their lives while fetching water from Lake Kigezi. The project now ends that chapter.

The project, worth 6 million, has extended safe water to about 500 residents across Kikuba and neighboring villages, marking an end to water scarcity that had plagued the community for decades.

Tumwesigye Magara, a community elder, said Kikuba residents have long endured hardship in their daily struggle for clean water, walking miles, while others risk their lives fetching from Lake Kigezi, a dangerous endeavor that has tragically claimed lives.

“We have suffered for so long. Our children missed school because they had to search for water. Women walked kilometers every day, and some even drowned in the lake trying to quench our thirst,” said Magara.

Kikuba resident Merab Kasande said the new water source will save lives, reduce water-borne diseases, give children time to study, and free women from the burden of long treks.

“This water will save lives. It will reduce water-borne diseases, give our children time to study, and free our women from the burden of walking long distances,” said Merab.

The area Councillor Tugume Muzafaru hailed MP Cadet Benjamin for visionary leadership and timely intervention, noting the water project will boost health, sanitation, small gardens, and food security across the village.

He called on residents to protect and maintain it as their lifeline for generations, while urging them to form a management committee for long-term sustainability.

“This water project will not only improve health and sanitation but also support small gardens and boost food security in our village. I call upon every resident to protect this project, maintain it, and own it, because it is our lifeline. We must ensure that this gift serves generations to come,” Tugume stated.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, MP Cadet Benjamin appreciated the people of Bunyaruguru for their trust and support, reaffirming his commitment to transformative development that directly impacts lives.

He declared water as life and the project just the beginning, pledging to end water scarcity across the constituency in his tenure, ensuring every village and household accesses clean water, while urging the community to safeguard the infrastructure for future generations.

“Water is life. No one should die or suffer in search of something as basic as clean water. This project is just the beginning. I pledge to continue working tirelessly to completely end water scarcity across the constituency. Every village, every household, will have access to safe, clean water,” said MP Benjamin.

With about 500 residents already reaping the benefits, the project stands as a powerful symbol of hope and dignity for the entire community, offering renewed promise for better health, food security, and improved livelihoods.
