Sources allege that the deceased had been enduring domestic challenges and had previously attempted to take his own life, only to be rescued by local defense personnel and area residents.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, told this reporter that the deceased’s wife and locals notified authorities at Kambuga Police Station after the grim discovery of the suicide.
SP Tumushime noted that, based on the deceased’s significant domestic challenges and his previous attempts to take his own life, investigators believe these factors contributed to his desperate decision.
“It is alleged that the deceased had been going through difficulties at home. This was not his first attempt. We have established that Mr. Birakwata previously tried to take his own life but was fortunately rescued by local area defense personnel,” SP Tumushime said.
The police mouse piece further advised loved ones facing domestic strife to seek professional counseling without delay, emphasizing that early intervention can prevent problems from escalating to irreversible extremes.
SP Tumushime further stressed that all domestic-related cases, whether physical, emotional, or psychological, must be reported to the police promptly, as timely reporting enables early intervention and could ultimately save lives.
“Suicide is not a solution. These are preventable tragedies. We encourage community members to look out for signs of distress in their neighbors and loved ones, especially the elderly who may feel isolated in their struggles,” added SP Tumushime.
Friends and residents of Katojo Village expressed shock at the loss of a man who, despite his personal battles, had long been a pillar of local leadership, known for settling disputes and guiding village affairs.
