RUKIGA – Rukiga Primary School has emerged as the overall winner at the 2026 Rukiga District Music, Dance and Drama Festival, amassing an impressive 988 points to clinch the top position among five competing schools.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!The highly anticipated competitions, held on Friday, August 7, 2026, at Kabale Bukinda Core Primary Teachers’ College (PTC) in Rukiga District, brought together a formidable lineup of schools, including Katungu, Kihanga Boys, Nyabirerema, Rukiga, and Noozi Primary Schools.
Rukiga Primary School’s stellar performance saw them dethrone their closest rivals and claim the coveted crown, while Kihanga Boys secured second place with 963 points and Nyabirerema settled for third with 893 points.
Noozi and Katungu Primary Schools rounded out the standings in fourth and fifth positions respectively, amassing 788 and 755 points, as the five-school contest showcased remarkable talent across the board.
Rukiga District Music, Dance, and Drama Committee Chairperson Oscar Akampurira commended the district leadership for consistently providing funds to support school participation in the competitions.
He further noted that Rukiga stands alone in the Kigezi sub-region for maintaining its festival preparations, despite receiving the same funding as other districts that failed to field their schools.
“We are deeply grateful to our district leadership for their unwavering commitment. While others have faltered, Rukiga continues to shine because we have chosen to prioritize our children and their talent. This consistency is what keeps our flag flying high in Music, Dance, and Drama across Kigezi,” Oscar remarked.
Presiding over the function, the Rukiga District Assistant Resident District Commissioner, Ainebyoona Babra, singled out Music, Dance, and Drama as a practice that demands time and dedication to adequately equip pupils with necessary skills.
“Music, Dance, and Drama are not mere extracurricular activities but vital disciplines that demand time, patience, and unwavering dedication to truly shape our learners with the skills they need for life,” Babra stated.
She commended school heads and teachers for their tireless training efforts, while also highlighting the equal opportunity category that reinforces the message of equal educational access for both boys and girls.
Rukiga District Education Officer Ndyabegyera Christopher committed his department’s continued support to the Music, Dance, and Drama Festivals, citing their role in promoting environmental conservation skills and equipping learners with future-ready competencies.
“As a department, we remain fully committed to supporting the Music, Dance, and Drama Festivals. These platforms do more than showcase talent. They build environmental conservation skills in our learners and equip them with competencies that will serve them well into the future,” remarked the DEO.
Christopher acknowledged that while government funds remain limited, proper planning ensures coverage of all activities. He confirmed that the winning team will now receive support to advance through the remaining levels up to the national stage.
Komuhangi Precious, a teacher and trainer for the victorious Rukiga Primary School, revealed that this was the school’s second time winning at the district level and pledged even better results at the next level this year.
“Our success is largely attributed to the school administration and the board committee, which wholeheartedly supports and avails funds to purchase requirements needed to adequately equip our learners with skills,” Precious noted.
The function was graced by several dignitaries, including the district vice chairperson Manigamukama Linus, district councillor Amedi Bende, head teachers, teachers, and other distinguished guests.
The participating primary schools showcased their talents across a diverse range of 13 competitive categories at the 2026 District Music, Dance & Drama Festival, including Western Tooke and the thought-provoking fight against HIV/AIDS category.
Other competition categories featured Folk Song, Dance, Rara, Sight Singing, Instrumental Composition, Vocal Solo, School Poem, Poem from the School, Story Telling, African Green Style, and Creative Song.
