KABALE – Outgoing Rubanda District Woman Member of Parliament Prossy Mbabazi Akampurira has urged her supporters to stop worrying about her, emphasizing that she still possesses wealth despite losing her seat in the recent election.

Ms. Akampurira made the Statements yesterday at the wedding ceremony of Kabale District-based journalist Kevin Tuheirwe Bayenda, held at Brazin Hotel Gardens in Kabale Municipality.

She was defeated by her long time political rival, Ms. Ninsiima Evelyn Kikafunda, who had previously contested and lost the Rubanda District Woman MP seat twice, first in 2016 when Rubanda was carved out of Kabale District.

Despite losing to Akampurira in the NRM Primary election held on July 17, 2025, Kikafunda re-entered the race as an independent candidate and won the general election held on January 15, 2026, by a margin of 11,886 votes.

Akampurira had secured victory in the NRM Primary with 52,693 votes, followed by Ms. Jacqueline Katabazi with 24,559 votes, while Kikafunda trailed behind with only 13,228 votes.

Addressing her supporters, Akampurira acknowledged that some people felt sorry for her, but she urged them not to. “They shouldn’t worry because I still have money and am doing just fine,” she said, adding, “It’s actually me who feels sympathy for those who talk about me.”

She further urged her supporters to remain calm, emphasizing that five years is a short period. She encouraged them to use this time to evaluate her performance in comparison to Kikafunda, who is set to assume her parliamentary duties in May 2026.

“Please give her space to work. After five years, we will come back here to assess her performance, and then you’ll see if voting me out was a loss or not,” she stated.

Meanwhile, Akampurira’s comments sparked social media backlash from some members of Rubanda District’s community, who questioned her motives behind the money claims.

In a comment on the WhatsApp forum named “Rubanda NRM ACTIVISTS,” State Minister of Finance Henry Musasizi, who is also the Rubanda District NRM Chairperson and MP for Rubanda County East, expressed shock at her statements .

“I have never seen people with money declare it publicly. I am tempted to call for her individual income tax return!!!” Musasizi remarked.

Other critics, including Ms. Rebecca Kehoda, criticized Akampurira’s public speaking approach. “Teach her about public speaking. She has failed at that since 2017, and her performance has only worsened. Whenever she appears in public, she is better off remaining silent,” Kehoda stated.

Mr. Allan Ayebazibwe, a youth leader in Nyamweru Subcounty, also pointed out Akampurira’s persistent boasts about her wealth, noting that she had repeatedly reminded people of her financial status.

“These are the same words she used during the last election campaigns. She claimed to have enough money. What impact did that have?” Ayebazibwe questioned.

Former Muko Subcounty L.C. III Chairperson Stephen Kamugisha also voiced his anger over Akampurira’s statements. He challenged her to contest again in 2031, claiming that only then would she realize that the people of Rubanda are tired of her “mockery.”

“Let her come back to contest in 2031. That’s when she will truly understand that the people of Rubanda can nolonger tolerate her morckery,” Kamugisha said.

However, some social media users, including Charlotte Kemigisha, supported Akampurira’s remarks, suggesting that her words were meant to motivate her supporters, who may have thought she was devastated after losing the 2026 election.

“You never know; she might have heard some people say she had become poor after the election,” Kemigisha commented.

Louis Rugirenkana, interpreted Akampurira’s statements as a display of strength and resilience despite the election outcome.

Ms. Prossy Akampurira became the first Woman MP for Rubanda in 2016, following the district’s creation from Kabale. She was re-elected in 2021, securing her second term in office. After her 2021 re-election, she was appointed as a Parliamentary Commissioner and was re-appointed to the 10-member commission headed by the Speaker of Parliament in 2024.
