RUBIRIZI – Students at Kampala International University (KIU), Ishaka Branch, have donated sanitary pads and other substantial collections of essential items to the Kicwamba Orphanage Foundation.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The donated items, which were delivered to the foundation over the weekend, include food stuffs, clothing, shoes, and scholastic materials. The donation aims to support both the orphanage’s students and other vulnerable members.
The initiative, led by the university’s student body, seeks to address the critical daily needs of children who have faced immense tragedy, including the loss of parents to poaching and HIV/AIDS.
Hasan Sentongo, the team leader from the KIU Ishaka Branch student group, said the drive came from a desire to help the less fortunate by stepping beyond lecture halls to make a real difference.
The group delivered essential supplies to support children’s daily welfare, with special emphasis on sanitary pads, a donation Sentongo noted helps fight period poverty.
He explained that many girls miss class simply because they lack basic menstrual products, so this support will help them stay in school, study, and protect their dignity.
“Every child deserves a chance to dream, learn, and feel loved. Whether it’s a sanitary pad that keeps a girl in class or a warm meal from a community walk, these small acts of kindness build futures,” stated Hasan Sentongo.
The founder of Kicwamba Orphanage Foundation, Edison Kyagaba, said the organization was created after realizing the area had many orphans who lost parents mainly due to poaching and HIV.
Kyagaba added that the foundation’s mission is to educate, transform, empower, and care for these vulnerable children, including those living with HIV.
“We saw too many children left alone after their parents were taken by poaching and HIV. So we built a home with a mission: to educate, transform, empower, and care for every vulnerable child, including those living with HIV,” Kyagaba emphasized.
He explained that the foundation organizes community guided walks, handcraft-making sessions, and traditional Nesic dance and drama performances.
Akankwasa Judith and Ms. Ana Blessing, student leaders at Kicwamba Orphanage Foundation, expressed profound thanks to the KIU team for what they called a restoration of hope for those who once felt forgotten.
Akankwasa explained that the sanitary pad donation greatly supports their education by helping girls stay clean, concentrate on their studies, and protect their dignity.
She added that many girls had been facing the challenge of lacking pads because their guardians could not afford them, which affected class attendance and focus, but today that burden has been lifted.
