LOCAL SPORTS – Kisoro SC Volcanoes have strengthened their grip at the top of the Western Region League table after a powerful 3–0 victory over Makenke Barracks FC on Sunday.

The football match, played at the Makenke military barracks playground (the home pitch of Makenke Barracks FC), lifted SC Volcanoes (Mutolere SC) to 39 points, with 32 goals scored.

On the other hand, the home team (Makenke Barracks FC) suffered a painful defeat, as they dropped from 4th to 7th place, remaining on 12 points with a negative goal difference (-7).

Arriving at the pitch at 3:15 PM, SC Volcanoes started strong and looked dangerous with several corners within the first 8 minutes, but Makenke’s defense, led by players wearing shirts number 6 and 16, stood firm.

Midway through the first half, Makenke fought back with aggressive attacks as shirt number 10 on the wing and long passes from number 15 tested the Volcanoes defense.

But Volcanoes quickly reorganized, regained control with accurate passing in midfield, and still could not score before halftime despite creating clear chances.

Striker Julius Lukyamuzi (No. 9) missed an open goal in the 40th minute, and moments later midfielder No. 12 wasted another big opportunity, sending the teams into the break tied at 0–0.

The second half began with Makenke pressing forward with energy, but SC Volcanoes slowly took control again. In the 60th minute, they won five corners in a row but still could not find the net.

Lukyamuzi Julius broke the deadlock in the 67th minute to make it 1–0. By the 75th minute, a defensive mistake from Makenke led to an own goal after a well-delivered long ball, shifting the momentum completely.

SC Volcanoes sealed the victory in the 78th minute when midfielder April (No. 8) fired in a powerful strike to make it 3–0.

Makenke Barracks head coach, Coach Mbiriwe, told the media that poor preparation was the key reason for the loss, admitting his team is not doing badly this season but is also not where they want to be.

He explained that because his team is made up of soldiers, they were called for government duty and missed their final training session, which meant they went straight into the match without proper preparation, and that affected their performance.

“We went straight into battle without our boots tied. Being soldiers, we answered the call of duty and lost our final training session. That is not an excuse; it is the truth. We are not where we want to be, but my boys showed heart, and we will fight again,” said Coach Mbiriwe.

He praised his players for their resilience and urged them to stay committed but admitted the club has financial problems, noting that signing players in the region requires a lot of money, which they currently lack.

SC Volcanoes head coach, Patrick Ochan, stated that winning 3–0 away from home is not easy and that they should have scored more in the first half after creating many chances but lacking concentration.

He also praised his team’s ball movement despite the difficult pitch, noting that the boys moved the ball very well and kept possession to play good football even on a hard pitch without grass.

“Winning 3–0 on a battlefield like Makenke is no small feat. We should have killed the game in the first half with all those chances, but the boys grew stronger after the break,” said Coach Patrick Ochan.

Coach Ochan said his team will not rest, as SC Volcanoes now shift focus to a high-stakes encounter against second-placed Six O’clock at Mashaka Playground in Kisoro District.
