RUKUNGIRI, UGANDA – The ruling NRM party in Uganda has strengthened its position in Rukungiri district with the defection of five FDC members, a significant political realignment at the grassroots level.

The defections occurred during an NRM structural meeting held on Friday at Mutaturwa Church of Uganda in Nyibingo Parish. The meeting was organized by Rubabo County’s NRM parliamentary flag bearer, Hon. Mwesigwa Mathias Rwabugumi.

The defectors, all from Nyibingo Parish in Kebisoni Sub-county, are Kyarimpa Hope, Medius Turyasingura, Elias Gumoshabe, and Nelson Nshekampora.

The former FDC members cited a strong desire to reunite with colleagues in the NRM and growing concerns over a lack of fairness and accountability within their former party.

They elaborated that such political shifts are often influenced by evolving ideologies, personal interests, and the strategic need to form alliances for effective service delivery.

Hon. Mwesigwa Mathias Rwabugumi warmly welcomed the new members, describing their defection as a significant boost for the party and a clear sign of growing unity and confidence in the NRM’s leadership.

He emphasized that the NRM’s door remains open to all who wish to collaborate on Kebisoni’s development and urged all residents to rally behind the party’s flag bearers to ensure meaningful progress.

Echoing this sentiment, the Vice Chairperson of Kebisoni Sub-county, Frank Mabwa, advised the new members to fully support the NRM leadership.

He stated that backing the ruling party’s candidates is the most effective way to improve household incomes and accelerate development in the area.

Mabwa emphasized that electing opposition candidates often fragments support and ultimately undermines service delivery, slowing down the pace of development.

The defection is seen as a strategic gain for the NRM in Rukungiri district, strengthening its grassroots structures ahead of future electoral activities.
