KAMPALA, UGANDA – Jacqueline Mbabazi has decisively reclaimed the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag for the Western Region Older Persons MP, silencing her rivals in a contentious party primary rerun.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The victory solidifies her status as the ruling party’s official candidate, after an internal NRM tribunal overturned her initial win, citing serious irregularities such as votes being erroneously added to her tally.
The decision to nullify her initial victory was delivered last month by tribunal chairperson John Musiime, alongside members Nelson Kamuhanda and Esau Isingoma, who ordered the NRM Electoral Commission to organize a fresh election within 14 days.
The results from the fresh poll, declared on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, by NRM Electoral Commission Chairman Dr. Tanga Odoi at the party headquarters, showed that Mbabazi secured a commanding 189 votes, representing 58.0% of the total.
Her main challenger, Patrick Kyamukaate Mutabwire, secured 137 votes (42.0%), in a race that ultimately became a two-horse contest.
Five other candidates—Bakazimbaga Muhindo Anne, Kabigumira David, Bashongoka Mary Kamaduuka, Gumisiriza Fideus Guma, and Bategeka Lawrence Nkooto—failed to register a single vote in the final tally of 326.
This victory positions Mbabazi as the ruling party’s official candidate for the Older Persons Member of Parliament, a special interest seat that advocates for the elderly, in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
