The group was apprehended while reportedly drinking at Grace Bar and Lodges, located on Rwebikoona Street in Rubaare Town Council, where Nahwera Macklin is employed.
The victim, Ms. Doreen Natukwasa, manager of the Kyabukuju SACCO Nyanga branch, reported that she received a distressing call around midday on Sunday informing her that her room had been broken into.
Upon rushing to the scene, she found her door ajar and her personal space in disarray, with several valuable items, including electronics, conspicuously missing.
“The room was open. I went in to check and found my 32-inch Hisense television, a 6×6 Uro foam mattress, clothes belonging to myself and my husband, and other belongings all gone,” Natukwasa stated.
Alarmed by the discovery and determined to recover her property, she promptly contacted the police canine unit to initiate a track-down operation for the perpetrators.
A K-9 team from the Ntungamo Central Police Station (CPS), led by PC Vincent Epero and accompanied by PC Andama Innocent, the officer in charge of the canine unit, swiftly responded to the call.
“We received a call from the victim, Ms. Doreen Natukwasa, at around 3:15 pm reporting the theft. Our team responded swiftly and was on the ground by 4:00 pm on Sunday, the 7th of September,” narrated PC Epero.
Using scent evidence from the crime scene, the police dog led the team to Rwebikoona Street, where it tracked the suspects to Grace Bar and Lodges, culminating in their arrest.
The Local Council One (LCI) Chairman for Kyabukuju II, Mr. Kenneth Byaki Twinamatsiko, confirmed the incident, noting that the theft occurred while the homeowner was absent.
Seizing the opportunity, he urged residents to remain constantly vigilant about their personal security, emphasizing that this responsibility persists even with law enforcement present.
“Residents must be extra cautious and vigilant, even with security personnel around. This incident is a reminder that we all have a role to play in safeguarding our properties,” he advised.
By press time, the suspects remained in police custody as investigations continued, with officers still documenting the incident and compiling a full report.
