The proposal aims to strengthen parliamentary oversight on land-related matters, including disputes, legislation, and policy implementation.

The nominated MPs include Hon. Ssemwanga Gyavira, Hon. Andrew Oulanyah Ojok, Hon. Kuluo Joseph, Hon. Ninsiime Boaz Kasirabo, Hon. Olobo James, Hon. Awor Betty Engola, and Hon. Kato Muhammed.

Others are Hon. Kaala Kevin Ojinga, Hon. Abdi Fadhil Kisos, Hon. Kabahenda Flavia Rwabuhoro, Hon. Kisembo Noeline, Hon. Christine Apolot, and Hon. Norah Bigirwa Nyendwoha.

The Chief Whip stated that the Committee on Lands is expected to address Uganda’s persistent land challenges, including disputes, evictions, corruption, and fraudulent transactions, while protecting vulnerable communities affected by land grabbing.

Hon. Obua emphasized that the selected members bring diverse expertise and regional representation that will be crucial in addressing Uganda’s complex land issues.

The committee will scrutinize government programs related to land management and collaborate with the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, and the Uganda Land Commission to ensure transparency and accountability.

Civil society organizations have long advocated for stronger parliamentary oversight to curb illegal land acquisitions and safeguard customary land rights.

Once approved by Parliament, the committee is expected to begin work immediately, with priorities including reviewing pending land-related bills, investigating high-profile disputes, and engaging with affected communities.

The proposed list will now undergo parliamentary approval, after which the committee will elect a chairperson and deputy to lead its operations.
