This was revealed by the Traffic Police spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Michael Kananura, during the Police Weekly Media Address at Police Headquarters Naguru.

Kananura said that preliminary investigations reveal that speeding and careless overtaking are the leading causes of crashes, contributing to 20% and 34% of incidents, respectively.

He confirmed that during the operation, 903 motorcycles were impounded for various offenses, including failing to wear helmets, riding without a valid license, and not having insurance.

The Traffic Police also highlighted that their enforcement operations will continue this week, with a heightened focus on careless driving offenses, including making U-turns, driving on pedestrian paths, driving in one-way zones against traffic flow, and engaging in reckless overtaking maneuvers.

Kananura confirmed that, in addition to enforcement, the Traffic Police will continue with road safety campaigns aimed at promoting responsible driving and reducing crashes.

He emphasized that the continued efforts of the Traffic Police aim to foster a culture of responsible driving and promote road safety.

Statistics indicate that 467 drivers were arrested for various offenses, 903 motorcycles were impounded, 88% of fatalities involve motorcyclists, passengers, and pedestrians, and speeding and careless overtaking contribute to 54% of crashes.
