KAMPALA – The four suspects in the brutal mob killing of national rugby player Sydney Gyabi Gongodyo, 27, have formally been charged with murder and remanded to prison until June 23.

The suspects, including Obed Mugwisa, 39, and Henry Kabugo, 21, both boda boda riders; Joseph Owino, 30, a security guard; and Elly Mundoni, 33, a delivery agent, appeared before the City Hall Court in Kampala on Friday, June 12, 2026.

The four were read the murder charges as the case falls under the High Court’s exclusive jurisdiction. Authorities argue that the accused acted alongside others still at large, and more arrests are expected as investigations continue.

According to a charge sheet sanctioned at Kira Road Police Station under CRB 619/2026, the quartet is charged with murder contrary to Sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 128.

Prosecution alleges that on June 5, 2026, at Upper Naguru East Road in Kampala District, the accused, with malice aforethought, unlawfully caused the death of the 27-year-old rugby player.

Gongodyo was killed in a fatal mob justice incident, reportedly after being accosted by residents in Masulira Zone, Bukoto, Kampala, who falsely accused him of snatching a woman’s handbag.

The charges mark a significant development in a case that has drawn widespread public attention and renewed concerns over the growing incidence of mob violence.

Meanwhile, police confirmed the investigation remains active, stating that the four remanded suspects are not the only perpetrators, as the accused and others still at large allegedly caused the death of Sydney Gyabi Gongodyo.

The killing has triggered widespread public debate about mob violence, with security agencies repeatedly cautioning the public against assaulting suspected offenders.

Under Ugandan law, murder is a capital offence carrying severe penalties upon conviction. The accused are expected to return to court on June 23, when prosecutors will present evidence supporting the charges.
