Kisoro, Uganda – Kisoro Timber Dealers and Carpentry Cooperative Society Limited is set to establish a mega project, the Skilling Development Centre, within Kisoro district.

This was revealed by the chairperson, Silas Nizeyimana, during the official opening of their timber stores and workshop business centre in Chahi village, Kisoro municipality.

The project aims to provide skills training, especially to the youth, and address environmental concerns to combat unemployment among young generations.

Nizeyimana noted that timber sellers and carpenters previously dumped waste in drainages, blocking water flow and affecting town sanitation.

To address this, the chairperson stated that the cooperative plans to hire experts to train members on using waste materials and recycling them.

However, they face challenges, including the need for three-phase electricity installation, water connections, and safety management of hazards.

Local leaders, including Sam Sendegeya and Ramadthan Ndikuyeze, emphasized the project’s potential to empower idle youth with carpentry skills.

Ndikuyeze, who donated land to the cooperative, warned members to protect the land from grabbers and promote sustainability by planting trees in bare hills.

The municipal commercial officer, Aaron Mfitumukiza, and Ayubu Kisubi Alikwan noted that the project will reduce congestion on Chuho Road and enable municipal tax collectors to easily locate the businesses.

Alikwan appealed to members to join the cooperative and engage their political leaders to secure support from President Museveni, including machinery for the skilling development centre.

The Municipal leadership plans to construct culverts along the road near the store and workshop to mitigate rainwater challenges.

Notably, the cooperative earlier received support from WWF Uganda, which launched a five-year strategic plan and provided a UGX 20,000,000 revolving fund scheme to Kisoro Timber Dealers and Carpenters Cooperative Society.
